Self Defense or Self Defeat? What is the great Dojo fail?

* Self Defense or Self Defeat

Self Defense or Self Defeat? First I have to make a statement categorically. Because someone is a martial art Black Belt, regardless of rank, does not make them a self defense expert. In truth, just the opposite.

One of the most important things that happen in a Dojo is the learning of self defense. Yet this is the area where the egos becoming the biggest, the most posturing is done, and the most attacks of a personal nature occur.

Self Defense or Self Defeat

A great example of this is the bullshido clowns. They have attacked me countless times. And in thus helped me to get a lot of students. Why? Because any critical thinker knows we do not need a punch of internet trolls decided what is good and what is not. We see nothing but this in society today.

The truth of self defense is there are no experts. And the combat people, the former seals etc are COMBAT people. Street defense and military have no relationship. In a war it is kill or be killed. On the street it is only survival. The attacker does not expect a fight.  But if you kill him, and it is not justifiable you go to prison for a long time.

Self Defense or Self Defeat

Many years ago, about 20 in fact I had a young man come into my Dojo for a free lesson. He told me he was far from a beginner and had been trained in the USA by the Navy Seals. Ok fine, why are you here?

I assigned my senior Black Belt to teach him his lesson. The man went to change in the dressing room and came out wearing Ninja tabbies. It was all I could do to not laugh out loud.

Self Defense or Self Defeat

He was awful! There was ZERO for previous training in this man, unless maybe he was 8 and trained for 6 months. He came into the office to see me afterwards and proceeded to brag about his training.

He grabbed my son Curt's wrist and applied a joint lock with pressure. He ask Curt, "do you know what this is?" Curt replied a basic wrist lock. The look on this guys face was priceless. Curt said to him "do it for real." The kid applied pressure, Curt moved in the Octagon and reversed the lock taking the man down.

We never heard from him again.

Why I removed my Self Defense Course.

I am NOT a self defense expert. And to be honest I do not believe there is any such thing.  Dojo's either teach Self Defense or Self Defeat. And I see mostly self defeat.

Years go, abut 12 years ago I certified in Grand Master Steve Stewart's Humane Pressure Points Tactics course. I am the highest level in this and authorized to teach this. And this is decent stuff for the right student. I released my own version back in 2017 but have since removed it.

Self Defense or Self Defeat

Why did I remove it? Because people are not interested inl earning they are interested in pretending they know everything. So this year I removed them from the market.

Where does the ego come from? The instructor or martial arts wins a few bar fights and they are enlightened. Whys is teaching so hard? Because something works for you does not mean it will work for others.  People who come to a martial arts teacher for self defense reasons are not looking to be champions, and not street fighters, they are please afraid of conflict. Cowards basically.

Yet you are going to teach them to FIGHT. EPIC FAIL.

Self Defense or Self Defeat

So what do you do? Teach them to ESCAPE first, to be safe. That was the basis of my Level One HPPT course. But it is part of Kosho Shorei and Kosho is the foundation of my eclectic root art of Hapkido

Once someone is comfortable with escaping then you maybe able to teach them to fight. But what most instructors do is offer a one size fits all pile of techniques that never work. And this about 95 percent of the offerings I have seen in the industry.

Self Defense or Self Defeat? Self defense means teach them to escape and be safe. Self Defeat means teach them the techniques and watch them fail.

Self Defense or Self Defeat in Conclusion

Self Defense or Self Defeat in Conclusion

All failure comes when you believe you have arrived. No technique has ever worked, and no martial artists can call themselves self defense experts. You may not like this, but it is true.  You might be a champion in the ring, but the guy attacking will kill you, the guy in the ring just wants to win.

No matter what martial art you train in never think you know it all. Always be learning and expanding. Keeping the white belt beginners mind. Thank you for reading Self Defense or Self Defeat.

3 Friends of Winter. What is the Sho Chiku Bai?

3 Friends of Winter

3 Friends of Winter. What is the Sho Chiku Bai? The seal of crest used in Kosho Shorie Ryu has a very deep history in the martial arts, and not just Kosho Ryu. Everything in the crest also has a deep and important meaning.

Today I am going to focus on the 3 Friends of Winter, Pine, Bamboo and Plum. The 3 Evergreens of the martial arts.

3 Friends of Winter

Back a few years ago I wrote an article on my Kyusho Jitsu World Blog called the Seasons of Life.  There is another I wrote also on the Season of Winter. And there is an important reason too! We all grow older. Most of all it happens a lot faster then we think it will.

The Kosho Ryu crest has many meanings, but to I am only going to be concerned with the Pine, Bamboo, Plum aspect.  What is taught as martial arts today is VERY incomplete.

3 Friends of Winter - Life Expectancy of Martial Arts Today

Most systems have a life expectancy of about 4 years, at which time they run out of materials to teach.  These tend to be very sport oriented and aimed at enrolling children and young adults.  This trend has caused people to view the arts as activities and not ways of life. Plus because of sub standard training and ideas injuries are high as the body wear out at the joints.

I had a friend back in the 80's who was a Taekwondo fighter at an international level. By the age of 30 he needed a walking cane due to joint injury. This is due to excessive, unbalance training in sport. Big price, no reward. We lost contact 30 years ago. But he needed new knees and hips.

When taught properly, and completely martial arts training lasts for a life time.

3 Friends of Winter

* Kosho Shorei Ryu

The 3 friends of winter refer to the pine, bamboo, and plum.

The origin of this term is found as early as the Record of the Five-cloud Plum Cottage from the Clear Mountain Collection of literary writings by Lin Jingxi, 1241-1310, a Song dynasty loyalist). “For his residence, earth was piled to form a hill and a hundred plum trees, which along with lofty pines and tall bamboo comprise the friends of winter, were planted.”

3 Friends of Winter

Every year, as the season progresses from autumn to winter, the days become progressively colder. While many plants and trees begin to wither away or shed their leaves, the pine, bamboo, and plum seem to do just the opposite with their surprising display of vitality. Indeed, this unique quality drew much attention of the ancient Chinese.

The praise that the Chinese have for the pine, bamboo, and plum derives from the natural ability of these plants to withstand and even flourish in harsh environments. They became symbols that encouraged people to persevere in adversity, providing inspiration through consolation and determination. Consequently, these three became common subjects through the ages in Chinese painting and calligraphy. Because artists bring different experiences and feelings to these subjects, their works show a variety of forms, expressions, and sentiments.

3 Friends of Winter in Conclusion

3 Friends of Winter in Conclusion

The study of Kosho Ryu, which I began in 2000 make my martial art training timeless.

My Hapkido training was beginning to destroy my body with excessive wear and tear.

In the martial arts you should get better, more devastating with age. Not shrivel up and die. My art of Hapkido, which I rebuilt with Kosho Concepts and Principles not only became more effective, but also timeless. I am better today then I was 30 years ago.

And that is the idea. Martial Arts are for the long haul, a path of life, not an activity or sport. Consider this....

Thak you for reading 3 Friends of Winter.

Martial Arts are Evil! Why would I say this?

* Martial Arts are Evil

Martial Arts are Evil! Why would I say this? I became concerned with the direction of the martial arts back in the late 80's.

As I began to see the disappearance of values and ethics. But 2008 I was appalled at what was being taught, and how it was being taught.

Back in 2008 I had a large commercial Dojo in Windsor Ontario Canada. Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts Institute.

Martial Arts are Evil!

It was in a BIG expensive lease in the best possible place in South Windsor. But after 18 months in my lease the idiot landlord decided to allow a fight club to open in the same plaza. I was promised they were NOT going to be teaching children. But that was a lie

One day while I was out delivering fliers in the area I found one of this clubs fliers. A full colour image of 2 men in a ring fight, one punching the other in the face, and blood flying everywhere.

On the next line it showed an image of a young child touting how they also were experts at teaching children (another lie).  The owner had ZERO experience. because I knew his teacher.  He would brag about how he intended to put me out of business.  To my face he was respectful, behind my back was very different.

Martial Arts are Evil

I was sickened when I saw this. But I was not really worried. However he did get children as students. This does not say much for the parents! Some children left my school for his after he would talk to the parents in the parking lot. Would you send your kids to a fight club? This is barbarianism and one clear reason why the world is in trouble today.  Tell me I am wrong?

A few month later on a Saturday we were doing a belt grading. Before it started I went to the variety store in the plaza, which was also a post office to send out some Kyusho DVDs.  I was in my Gi, which was normal. Good advertising since I was high profile there.

Martial Arts are Evil!

There was a woman in front of me in line who turned to be and yelled. "What you do is evil! Martial Arts are Evil!!!" I told her she did not understand what I did. I even invited her to come to my school and see. She told me i made her sick. I was this was the only time I have heard this. But sadly it was not.

I ended the conversation. She obviously was talking about the fight club upstairs and not me. But she made her opinion very, very clear.

And she is NOT wrong.

Martial Arts are Evil! - What are we teaching

I have watched for decades as many instructors glorify violence. Teaching overkill in their classes yet never discussing deescalation of violence, or teaching escaping arts first, and only doing harm when there is no choice.

And also many of these men and women have no clue what they are doing.  Sport does not apply to the street, and One Step or one attack/punch technique training has its uses, but it is far from a solution.  One of the issues is because the instructor can fight or has won some fights and therefore believe they are enlightened.

It is time in my opinion to get back to the real purpose of martial art training. Self improvement, Body - Mind - Spirit connection, with self defense as the byproduct. A complete martial arts systems. Living your training always searching for more knowledge.

Martial Arts are Evil! in Conclusion

It was in a BIG expensive lease in the best possible place in South Windsor. in Conclusion

Today the biggest selling commodities on the internet are sex and violence. Porn being the number one commodity. This is very sad. Graphic real violence is second.  How did this ever become something normal? I have a student who has been with me about 2 decades now who wrote an article on his blog about Healing Violence

I encourage you to go read this one.

One mandate here at the World Budo Alliance is to bring like minded martial artists and teachers together. For the purpose of getting back to teaching martial arts based on ethics and values, not barbarianism.

If we do not the martial arts will disappear to history. We need to change the course of the ship, and never have anyone say again that Martial Arts are Evil.

Poison of Pride. What is the Sin of Pride?

* Poison of Pride

Poison of Pride: Why Pride comes before the fall. This is true each and every time and history shows this as truth.

One of the reason is the idiots in our world who try to rewrite history by denying it. Trying to create the world in their own image, rather then honouring and learning from the past.

Martial Art history is no exception to this either. Even if I wish it was. Pride  and the poison of pride are one of the Seven Deadly Sins. And today because of the chaos we life in sin is considered virtue.

The Seven Deadly Sins are:

  1. Lust
  2. Gluttony
  3. Greed
  4. Sloth
  5. Wrath
  6. Envy
  7. Pride

We, each one of us is guilty of one or more of these sins. However for me, WRATH is my major sin, I try each day to be a better person.  And control my wrath.

Poison of Pride

In the martial arts world you see this far too often. And the words Pride comes before the Fall seem to have little to no meaning. I wrote an article a while back on my Kyusho blog about the fact Martial Arts needs a New Paradigm. And it does, because if we do not change the direction this ship, then the arts will die in my lifetime. And I am sorry enrollment is not what I am talking about. I am talking about history and tradition. If you believe your enrollment is made up of students, and not customers looking for an activity you are in for a surprise.

Edmond Parker

Let's talk about Poison of Pride. Once place you really see the Poison of Pride is when a founder of an art passes away.

American Kenpo is a great example. After Edmond Parker passed away his first generation students began to fight among themselves, fragmenting the art.

Now as his first generation of students, great men like Frank Trejo have now passed the art fragments more. I had the privilege of knowing Grand Master Trejo.

He as an amazing man and friend. While I never trained with him, I knew him because he was GM Stewart's teacher.

And GM Stewart was and is my Kyusho teacher.  I was deeply sadden when I heard of his passing.

When the 2nd Generation is Gone

Once the 2nd generation of students passes or retires American Kenpo will disappear.

Why has this happened? Mostly because Mr Parker did not leave a clear path for his students to preserve the art he founded.  Then pride of some kicked in and division was born where unity once existed.

Pictured to the right Grand Master Frank Treyo. You are missed my friend.

Frank Treyo

The very same is true of Aikido wit the passing of O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba passed. The infighting for control of the art lead to the "Way of Harmony" becoming the "Way of Disharmony."

* Morihei Ueshiba

Poison of Pride: I recalled so well in 1987 how the Aikido world attacked Steven Seagal.

Perhaps you do not like Seagal, but when you attack someone like he was and continues being attacked, you show you pride and the poison in your soul from it.  Your mental illness is showing!

The are many people I have met in the arts I did not like too. But I do not gossip about them. And it happened in Tae Kwon Do also when General Choi Hong Hi passed in 2002. I have a linage connected to him myself.

Now I admit the connection is foggy. My first Grand Master teacher Chung Won Oh was very close to the General.

Poison of Pride

I have heard that Mr Oh studied with the  General, and I have heard the General studied with Mr Oh. Why is this information unclear? Too much pride as some 1st generation students try to rewrite history to glorify themselves.

I did not even get into how this happened in Kosho Shorei Ryu. However my kudos to a man I call teacher Hanshi Bruce Juchnik for his tireless work to preserver the art and teaching of Great Grand Master James Mitose.

Poison of Pride - W.B.A Preservation of History and Arts.

One of the project I am currently working on in the World Budo Alliance is the History and Preservation of the Arts. And I am looking for people to help me accomplish this.

But I will say that I have no interest in anyone seeking glory. You are not going to get paid for this either. If you decide to join this team and compile the history of your chosen art it will require time and effort. I am not looking for stories either. But proven content with citations to back everything up.

If this interest you then use the form below for questions to let me know.

I hope you will join me in this project, and a massive project it is too! And this project is about work, not glory. Yes your name will be credit on the page for the research, but the work comes first.

Martial Art Mystique is Gone. What happened to it?

* Martial Art Mystique is Gone

Martial Art Mystique is Gone:  I remember well when I was a child seeing the pilot for the Green Hornet, and watching Bruce Lee run down a flight of stairs jump and kick out a light. I was amazing.

That was about 55 years ago now.

Today all the mystery that was once part of the martial arts is long gone. Martial Art Mystique has disappeared.

Martial Art Mystique is Gone

When I was in High School and boxing with the Windsor Amateur Boxing Club, there was a kid in my grade who was taking Tae Kwon Do with Bob Chase of United Tae Kwon Do, This was the first martial art school that I recall in the city. But I know there were others.

At school when this guy took a stance there was a great "aura" about him of being invincible. All I wanted to do was become a martial artist. Another friend [Sensei Grant Kruly] had become involved in Aikido. He was amazing! He and I used to go downtown to Bruce Lee movies on Saturday afternoon. It did not matter how many times we saw them!

Martial Arts was Mysterious!

Martial Art Mystique - What Happened?

Today the mystery is long gone. Everyone and his brother has had some kind of training. We now also have a proliferation of systems saying how "karate" does not work, only my "special forces" stuff does.

Commercialization has done damage. And I am pro commercialization, but not selling out. You do not have to sell out because you have a commercial Dojo. However the arts have become very watered down as Black Belts rushed to open schools and water down the teaching to get children into programs and appeal to more adults.

The martial arts lost their street effectiveness, and mystery due to the times. The went from COVERT to OVERT. But it does not need to be this way. On the street there is no longer an element of surprise that the arts once held. Everyone has seen it. Or have they? Is the Martial Art Mystique gone?

Martial Art Mystique is Gone - Origins in the West

Robert Trias

A vast majority of what we see in the martial arts world came because of the military after WWII.

This continued with the Korean Conflict as well as Vietnam.

The issue with this was, while these men and women were very talented, their training was not complete. They stopped learning themselves to operate a Dojo. Now understand my words.

They kept training, but stopped learning. Formal teaching was in most cases less than a year.

There were exceptions to this, men like Grand Master Robert Trias [above] who were true pioneers of the arts in the west.

Sport became a proving ground, but sport proves nothing. I lost fights in competition, but no one ever beat me!

Martial Art Mystique is Gone

Back when I was a kid, hearing about the arts, size did not matter, sex did not matter, age did not matter. Today it is an activity for the young, not a life long journey where you grow BETTER with age.

But it can be that way! And the mystery can return to the arts when you study a complete system. And understand that even if you have 60 years in the arts you do not know it all. No one ever does. Only the closed minded think they know it all.

My new book which will release very shortly covers all this. It is called Kosho Ryu the Natural Laws of Motion. Learn to use nature in your training not appose her.

Martial Art Mystique is Gone in Conclusion

Martial Art Mystique is Gone in Conclusion

If my book interest you great. If not then no worries! BUT, continue to learn. Now I am not talking about style jumping here. Get a good solid foundation in an art and grow from there!

But that foundation takes time.

If you think you can learn some blocks, strikes and kicks, then you are enlightened you are dead wrong. Have a look at this article called the Mind of a Martial Artist.

Knife Pathways Why most Knife Training is an Epic Fail.

* Knife Pathways

Knife Pathways: Why most Knife Training is an Epic Fail. Today it is time for a small dose of harsh reality. And I am sure this will flair up some ego. But, truth is truth.

Almost everything taught today that calls itself "knife defense" is an epic fail, based on Hollywood fantasies and the false belief that martial arts black belts are self defense experts. This is dangerous thinking.

Now I am not saying that you should listen only to me and forget the vast numbers of courses and seminars on knife defense. What I am saying is that you should not believe this information will save your life. And if the instructor tells you it will they are being negligent. First off techniques do not work, EVER. Because this is a one size fits all approach. And it is based on the idea of what the defender wishes to do.

There is also a fantasy of standing and fighting someone with a knife. Only if you want to bleed to death is this a good idea. "The knife you do not see is the knife that cuts you." I strongly suggest read this article written by former Detroit Police Officer Kara Borshuk call 13 Misconceptions about Knife Attacks. And she HAS BEEN STABBED.  Understanding knife pathways it the way forward.

Knife Pathways

* Knife Pathways

First you need to forget the Michael Myers Hollywood bull crap out of your mind. And also the "combat" knife defense. Street is not a military combat situation. It is great to learn, but the nutcase on the street looking for a fix is not a soldier facing another soldier in a kill or be killed situation. You need to focus on what is going to happen on Woodward Ave in Detroit, not a military theater in a war zone.

On the street the attacker has chosen you because they believe they will get what they want easily. They are not expecting to lose. Military is kill or be killed. Street is survival.

Knife Pathways is a different approach to knife. It is not about reacting to a knife attack with a technique. And I will restate this, "the knife you do not see is the knife that cuts you." In knife pathways you are not learning to defend against a knife. You are learning to attack with one.

Unless you master how to kill with a knife, and making sure they knife is never seen, and no one has a clue what happened, you will never be able to defend against one. You must have a deep understand about everything "knife." While there are many who understand and train this way, they are the minority.

* Knife Pathways

This image is NOT what happens in reality. It is fun to train, but this is not how a street situation is going to.

All knowledge is good, but it must be kept in a balanced understanding.

"the knife you do not see is the knife that cuts you."

Knife Pathways - How does this work?

The majority of martial arts taught today are reactionary martial arts. I teach a preparatory martial art. One that teaches not just what to do, but when and how to do it. Using the natural laws that govern all movement. Based on responding to what they attacker is going to do.

But in this case with a knife concealed in your hand. Follow this link to learn more about my Kosho Ryu Knife Pathways

One of the mandates of the World Budo Alliance is inspiring martial artist to continue the learn and teaching process. This blog is not going to be a showcase for my products. However I consider this topic, a very misunderstood topic, to be one of importance in the martial art world today.

History of the WBA [World Budo Alliance]

* History of the WBA [World Budo Alliance]

History of the WBA [World Budo Alliance]: As I sit here and write this in 2022, I remember back when the organization was born in 1998.

At the time, it was new and unheard of. As anyone who has spent any time in martial arts at all, you know that’s the devil. Nothing is worth anything, unless it has years of history behind it.

New ideas are mostly worthless, and deemed unauthentic.

History of the WBA

An idea that is a week old and deemed false, a joke, etc, but gains great value in time. Take that same idea decades later, and now it is worth very much. It has history, etc. Somehow makes it better. And so the History of the WBA.

Introducing a new concept in a world that only exists because of new concepts, but in that same world new concepts are shunned, isn’t easy. The martial arts are great. The martial arts world is outright insane at times. In modern times, if an idea on an organization, or method of movement comes from you, in the present, it is ridiculed.

But, if you are following an idea, that centuries ago was founded by an individual who claimed to have obtained their knowledge from a spirit, that impregnated their dreams one night, well, that get’s the stamp of authenticity.

Anyhow, enough on that point.

History of the WBA [World Budo Alliance]

* History of the WBA [World Budo Alliance]

History of the WBA: Always a renegade (or, if you know your martial arts history, I’m the definition of traditional), I always wanted to do something different.

I left my original instructor at 17, because I knew his material to be not enough, sub-standard, and fanciful. I wanted to do better for anyone I would teach.

That is information for another day, but I mention it here to give you an idea as to why I started all of this in the first place, 24 years ago. I’m the type that never quits, but will change something and strike out on my own at anytime it makes sense to me. I don’t fear the court of public opinion.

I only care about my motives, and my vision. Sometimes, doing that has filled rooms. Sometimes, has left me standing alone. Love it either way, and I still operate in that fashion. Bring the noise.

History of the WBA - Martial Art Organizations

When I started on my own, opening my first club at 17, I joined an international organization, then another, then another…then another. They were all the same, no real purpose. They collect a fee, send materials, be there to promote in grade, etc, But big deal. What were we together, contributing to the world, through our martial arts?

Always in the back of my mind, was “what can I do to give through the martial arts, to not just martial artists, but non-martial artists as well..?” I always felt the martial arts were good for all. But how to deliver that good.

Teaching classes only goes so far. Being a religious reader of martial arts magazines back then (remember magazines…?), I came across a news piece, about a cluster of clubs in the USA that had conducted a seminar, with an entrance fee, that was 100% donated to charity.

Light switch moment! Back then I was much younger, thought I could do anything, so always shot big. Failed most of the time, but shot anyway. Too young, stupid and brave to do it any other way.

What if, one could do this:

1- Form a martial arts organization of practitioners from around the world.
2- Have that organization’s only purpose, be 1-3 major seminars per year
3- Have all the membership vote on a charity of choice leading up to the next seminar
4- Hold said seminar, with all proceeds going to that charity.

If one could build an international group of this kind, imagine how much we could do for society, through martial arts, without a person being a martial artist to reap the rewards? Isn’t martial arts about helping fellow man, being selfless, etc?

In time, as I grew older, I learned the tenants of the martial arts come mainly from the religious beliefs attached to the founders and practitioners of martial arts systems, but again, another subject for another time.

History of the WBA - A Winner?

* Language of Budo

I was sure I had a winner. Again, enthusiasm of youth. Great spirits and intentions, but not enough foresight to think of logistics. Where are these people located, how far apart, and how can the physical gatherings actually be facilitated?

Another side I had not anticipated, was the reception of large charitable groups to the idea. I thought visiting these groups in person, pitching my idea of trying to form a body to raise funds for them, would be received very well.

Nope. They mostly thought I was some dude looking to commit fraud, and use them as a front to do my dirty deeds. (insert the “F” word here). But, that didn’t deter me. Shoot, see where we land.

I started sending letters out to well known martial arts leaders, including an info pack, membership form, and a certificate of membership.

History of the WBA - Black Belt Magazine

Should they accept, simply send the form back. Should they decline, send it all back. To my surprise, completed membership forms and acceptance was what was arriving in my mailbox. I then placed an ad in Black Belt magazine (Oct 1999 edition, page 123). This brought about more support.

* History of the WBA [World Budo Alliance]

Good news, is I now had members in 6 countries. Bad news, was each of these individuals, were the sole members, in each of those 6 countries.

Now what? That is a question I presented to these individuals, who were older and more experienced than me, and each had well-known organizations of their own.

Answer was the same: The status quo of other organizations, is what gets asses in the seats. Perhaps re-brand as such, but attach part of your original philosophy to it. OK. So I did.

Instead, I went this way:

1- Create an organization, bringing martial artists together, to share their expertise, resources, and friendship, with other martial artists, and agencies worldwide, that all have the common goal of friendship and sharing.
2- Do not limit the above thinking to fundraising for charities. Instead, anything of a giving or assisting nature.
3- To live step number two, this would mean offer for free, what other organizations charge for.

World Budo Alliance is Born

* World Budo Alliance

History of the WBA: I called this new endeavor the “World Budo Alliance”. A true alliance of like minded martial artists, concerned with training, and sharing.

That took off!

The best of the best joined. Told their friends, who followed. People get hot under the collar if you name names so many years after the fact, so I won’t.

But, as any past members can easily attest, many of the world’s most recognizable martial arts leaders, were in some shape of form, affiliated with the World Budo Alliance during the short golden years, of 2000-2002.

Some of the great works we completed together:
  • Time in grade promotions, and support to instructors and clubs in nations where the paying of fees for the same with other groups, was not possible.
  • Recognition of individuals looking to form their own systems, and share with the world their own martial arts expression (which is every person’s right). Some of these folks, then enjoyed massive followings, still in existence today.
  • The creation of safety courses on such topics as Women’s Self defense, Youth safety, and other subjects. These courses, would be used not only by our membership, but by some police agencies as well. I personally donated such courses to various police agencies in the Southern USA, as well as in Portugal, and the UK.
  • And much more, to list here.

History of the WBA

* History of the WBA [World Budo Alliance]

We were huge….but alas, broke. Lol. We could not get beyond anything that could be supplied in print or video. In time, and in fairness, people wanted sanctioned tournaments, in-person seminars, and such.

Of course. But, again, we were supplying everything imaginable in printed or video form. The costs associated with putting on events at actual venues, we simply did not have the funds for.

New challenge, new direction. We brought in minimal fees. Not received well.

The folks we were helping that simply could not pay, felt betrayed. So we continued to help those we could….but if you do it in one part of the world, you have to do it across the board. So, now we’re shooting ourselves in the foot.

Further, some of our more well known members, understood, actually had a hand in suggesting that change. But some others, shocked us by expressing the opinion that we had recruited them for their status, to eventually use them and their status, as means to charge money of others. Thunder rolling.

History of the WBA continues

Further, when you are open to everyone, globally, you sometimes have friends of one another joining, but, you also have sworn enemies of one another joining. Being a close-knit group, we would announce in a mass email to the membership, anytime there was a new addition to the WBA family.

Sometimes, an email from a current member would come in, detailing how evil that person is, and should not be here.

As you can imagine, the new member would have equal amounts of “facts” and “history” to “expose” the current member, who is a charlatan, and has fooled us all. Then, each might even go as far as to individually contact various other members, and now you are refereeing a global internet martial arts feud.

History of the WBA

Now if you make a decision (which I always did), you can guarantee not only a direct confrontation from the disgruntled party, but normally all of their friends in the martial arts world as well. Sheesh!

* History of the WBA [World Budo Alliance]

Once this became the main activity of the WBA, I shut it down. Not only were we no longer achieving our goals, the organization was now becoming a vehicle for everything that can be wrong in the martial arts world. War and ego, 24 hours a day, no commercials.

History of the WBA Continues....

So now you’re thinking: “well, that’s not a great story. Why in the world would I want to be a part of this re-birthed group?”. Here are some points to ponder, that I now understand in retrospect, being middle age vs the young adult I was then:

1- While there were many involved, I held the reigns at the front of the sleigh. Error!
2- It took me many years of painful experience, to learn my ideas alone, are not always the best.
3- I ran the organization, politically. Meaning, I made decisions based on what was demanded that day, just to scratch my head the next day at the fallout, and wonder how to manage this new scenario.

In retrospect, I should have launched the organization, started it’s growth, then made it owned by all, and then step back and be a part of what more experienced folks could build upon. We would have been one of the most successful, sustaining multi-style martial arts organizations on earth. Many thought we would be.

History of the WBA - Rebirth of the WBA

The good news, is that can all still be true. My true friend and brother in Budo, Grand Master Art Mason, is a true level headed soul of reason, thoughtfulness, and foresight. The foundational intentions of the WBA, now led by him and his humble steady hand, allows a 2nd chance, and opportunity to get this right. I was the founder of the original WBA, the rough prototype, and he stood by my side.

He is now the founder of the new chapter of the WBA, the finished and improved model, and I am honored to stand by his side. The battles of the past have taught us much, and this new launch, totally initiated by Grandmaster Art Mason, is the way to go for any and all true martial artists. I am honoured, that he scoured the earth to find me, and dig me up to be a part of this.

History of the WBA - Honouring the Past

In closing, I want to give honorable mention to a past member of the WBA executive during the original version. He and I would spend many Sunday afternoons on the phone, discussing many things of budo, and of life. He was older than I (as was everyone, I was in my early 20’s then).

We had nicknames for each other. I would call him “Yoda”, because of his wisdom, experience, and demeanor. He would call me “Young Skywalker”, because in his view I had all the right ingredients and intentions, just needed life experience to make it all real.

Soke Raymond Hayes

After the WBA ended, we lost touch. I was saddened when searching for him on the web years later, to come across his obituary. I consider him one of my teachers. He never taught me any physical aspects, and we never shared company in person. But my, how he taught me many things of the Budo mental and spiritual! Soke Raymond Hayes, thank you for everything. Soke Hayes was a very important part of the History of the WBA.

In many times during my life, I remember a conversation you and I had. It was about the rapid growth of the WBA. I was gushing that we were growing in leaps and bounds. You said “Leaps and bounds can be great, unless you find yourself on the moon. Then, those leaps and bounds are a bad thing, as everything will spiral out of control."

There is no gravity on the moon. Stay grounded. Take those leaps and bounds, but be sure to take the time to be tethered to something solid. ” Wise Yoda, most wise."

Humbly yours in the arts,

I want to take a moment to personally thank my old friend Kyoshi Dave DeGrouchie for this article called History of the WBA. It will be one of many from him. I was so very happy and honoured to have reconnected with Kyoshi Dave and have him agree to return to the organization he founded.

All ideas have their time. And Kyoshi Dave was an is a visionary in our martial arts world.

Most of all ideas and truth go through a process. That process is:

  1. 1st they are laughed at
  2. 2nd they are violently attacked
  3. And finally accepted as self evident

The time for the World Budo Alliance has come. But its success comes from the rich History of the WBA and the members who walk the path with us.

Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day! Keep Learning!

Of Pride and Prejudice Failure on the path of Budo

* Of Pride and Prejudice

Of Pride and Prejudice: First and foremost this is not a "woke" article about someones feelings. When I write or say something that offends I am happy.

This means I am making someone think.

People who live in a highly emotional state will have a short life due to the constant overworked state of the endocrine system.

And from a self defense aspect because of the overactive Triple Warmer [Heater] Meridian they are easy to deal with on the streets. And they tend towards never ending conflict in their lives.

But what I am talking about is pride and prejudice, two very normal states of the human mind that hinder successful martial arts training.

Of Pride and Prejudice - There is a path

There is a path of training, and pride in what you do is normal for the beginner. But you need to move past this. Pride is a part of the Ego. And Ego prevents learning.  Years ago I spoke to a very well known Judo grand master whom I invited to a seminar. He laughed at me and told me "I do not attend seminars I give them." Obviously learning was off the table for this man. He was, back in the day, on the WBA board. So I removed him for his lack of interest in promoting us beyond his name on the website.

I am coming up on 40 years in the arts. Plus I have never stopped my study. And today this is still true. Very importantly I am still research, learning and training in new things. Someone of pride stops learning, because they start to believe they know everything. And they will be the first to tell you.

The next is prejudice. We all have prejudices. Therefore we judge things in our environment and this is a good thing! Prejudice or judgement are needed skills. Tied to ego this is something that keeps us safe! That feeling that perhaps something is wrong is important.

But on the Dojo floor to be of Pride and Prejudice limits our training. We must overcome both to continue to learn.

Of Pride and Prejudice

Let's look at some examples.

  • I love Kata, but do not like Kumite
  • Kumite is all that matters
  • Competition translate to street
  • Pressure points do not work
  • and on and on...

This is tunnel vision in training. Classic examples of missing the boat on the martial arts path of training. And this is normal for the human experience, but death to the Karateka. This is closed minded, limited thinking. The martial artist who thinks like this is standing at a road block, believing they have arrived. This is far from the truth.

Most of all this is actually a failure of the current paradigm of the Dojo. Because the commercial world is a big challenge, one I have much experience in after running my own Dojo Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts for 15 years, instructors try to make students happy.

Of Pride and Prejudice

This does not turn out well because students become comfortable, and then bored because they are not challenged. Those who do not want challenge are bad choices for your Dojo. The bored student leaves creating financial issues for the Dojo. Then more concession are made to keep the students happy. It is a vicious circle.

Now I cannot say this is all bad. However when Pride and Prejudice are the normal result of training because of incomplete martial systems, and the instructors no longer continuing their own training, the path themselves. The benefits are lost. And the benefits of training come with time.

Of Pride and Prejudice in Conclusion

Of Pride and Prejudice in Conclusion

Of the things I hope to accomplish with the Resurrection of the World Budo Alliance is to unite martial arts worldwide.

And to promote learning. We offer some FREE courses for anyone interested and this will expand.

Thank you for reading Of Pride and Prejudice!

Old Man’s Martial Art the Ageless Path of Budo

Old Man's Martial Art

Old Man's Martial Art: Time comes for us all. And as a youth I always knew that one day I would grow old. I just did not realize it would happen so soon.

The other day I was reading some comments on different martial arts masters of old, and some of the older masters who are still alive and teaching. I saw a comment from a young man, and I must assume he is young by the comment, that "Kosho Ryu is an old man's martial art."

This made me smile from ear to ear. Back about 2 or 3 years ago I wrote an article called Kyusho Jitsu Winter Season about how important pressure point study is for those of us aging. And guess what, we are all aging! This is a very important article because aging with grace in the arts means understanding the human body. And over 98% of my follower are over 45 years of age.  But I have always offered the training in Natural Laws know Kosho as part of this.

Old Man's Martial Art

The study of Kosho Ryu is about understanding more than just "what to do," Every martial art teaching this. Most importantly however very few martial arts teach "when to do it." or "where to move." There is a proclivity in the arts taught today to stand and fight. In my opinion that makes these martial arts only for the young, and the foolish. Why would I accept taking on mass, taking on damage when it is simply not necessary.

This is because today martial arts training is about BODY. Training for strength and endurance ONLY. The Mind - Body connection is therefore poor. Mind -Body - Spirit is missing. Those who do not agree are young of age and low on experience.

I recall my competition days. I was young and egotistical. However as the years went by, after a tournament while nursing my wounds, I would think to myself, "and I paid to do this." Somehow the trophy seemed worthless at this point.

An old man's martial art, as I age that makes sense. And when I was 25 I was sure I knew everything about everything. As I aged I began to realize I know nothing.

Old Man's Martial Art - Kosho Ryu

Old Man's Martial Art

I have been writing some books for my followers on Kosho the past few months. One such book is Kyusho Jitsu related. Because Kosho Ryu is a complete martial art system pressure points are taught by default within it.

And because it is part of the art the approach to Kyusho Jitsu is different.

You can learn more about Kosho Book of Q-Sho here

Today I am refocusing my martial art training and teaching on Kosho Ryu. I began that journey in late 2000. However today I see these teaching of great important. The current state of the martial arts world is not good. If we do not change this many of these teachings will be lost to time. The days of the Dojo will be gone if we do not change things. That is why the resurrection of the World Budo Alliance and returning to the teachings and paths of old.

A Good Coward is the Path to Bravery

* A Good Coward

A Good Coward is the Path to Bravery: James Mitose stated "if a man comes to your to learn to fight who is a coward then teach him to run, to be a good coward first. Then once he is confident he can run teach him to fight."

This is great wisdom.

I have a follower who writes me often for self defense advice. I finally had to tell him to stop writing because he just kept repeating is questions.

The man is a self proclaimed coward. And I must agree.

A Good Coward is the Path to Bravery

But, I have handled him wrong. I have always told him there is no shame in running. But this massive issue of being a coward caused his self worth to decline. And now manifests itself in him arguing with people to the point of them turning violent. He is self destructive and puts himself in bad situations.

I should have taught him to run, to be a good coward.

Most of all I personally do not like the image the martial arts has today. They were never intended to be sport. Now I have no issue with the idea of competition. I did it for 8 years in the 80's and early 90's. But it has gone to far.

The martial arts needs to be for the average person not just the elite athlete.

Teaching Martial Arts

The issues with the commercial school are showing in the decline of the arts. Many of the complete systems are disappearing along with their history because of the need of paying high rents. Teachings are watered down to suit the masses rather than tailored to the student.

History is no longer taught, language is no longer taught.

When I began my training it was survival of the fittest thereby eliminating many of the students from success. While I am completely in favor of hard training. There needs to be teaching. It is important we TEACH and if necessary teach a person to be a good coward, then once they are, we can teach them how to defend.

A Good Coward is the Path to Bravery

I am not a fan of the term to fight. I believe this also gives the wrong impression. I teach the values and benefits of martial arts training. On the path of Budo. Self Defense is a byproduct.

I am also not a fitness instructor or as I call them "professional counters." I am a teacher. This means I adapt to the students needs to bring them along the path. This is why there is a certification program in my old Dojo for teachers.

As martial arts teachers many of us have lost our way. We have subscribed to the Western Culture lie of instant gratification. Most of all we have to remember that the benefits of martial art training come with time. And the learning must continue for our entire lives.
