From a Single Step to a Thousand Miles: My Martial Arts Odyssey

Beside me was my then-wife, not just a partner in life but in this new endeavor we were about to embark on. Little did I know, this day would mark the beginning of an odyssey that would shape the course of my life.

Early Lessons and Unforgettable Bonds

Adorning that first uniform and learning to tie the white belt symbolized more than just the start of martial arts training; it was the first step in a journey of self-discovery and mastery. Among the most impactful figures in this journey was Cristina, a young Romanian blue belt. Cristina was not just an instructor; she was a testament to resilience, having fled the communist regime with her family. Our bond, transcending the typical student-teacher dynamic, was built on mutual respect and shared struggles. She became more than a mentor—a confidante, a 'sister' in arms. Rising Through the Ranks

My passion for martial arts was not just about physical training; it was a quest for excellence and understanding. Achieving the Black Belt by 1987 was a significant milestone, but it was just the beginning. Taking on the responsibility of running a dojo presented new challenges and learning experiences, further deepening my dedication to the art.

A Quest for Roots and Renewal

The turn of the millennium brought with it a desire to explore the origins of Hapkido, leading me to the World Hapkido Federation. However, it was within the World Budo Alliance (WBA), under the expansive vision of Founder Dave Degrouchie, that I found a community that mirrored my values and aspirations. Choosing to align with the WBA, I embarked on a path that offered not just rank recognition but a platform for growth, innovation, and connection.
