Tenets of Martial Art Training – Returning to Values of Old

* Tenets of Martial Art Training

Tenets of Martial Art Training: Back in 2003 in Orlando Florida I was very honoured and privileged to have a coffee with Grand Master Joon Rhee.

We spoke at this time about the direction the martial art world was headed in.

I will never forget him asking me if I had Tenets at my school, Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts. When I told him I did he smiled and asked me what they were.

These Tenets of Martial Art Training are:
  1. Integrity
  2. Courtesy
  3. Self Control
  4. Commitment
  5. Perseverance
  6. Indomitable Spirit

When I told him these he smiled and said GOOD. A martial art without tenets, without a code of ethics is simply only barbarianism

And I agree 100 percent

Tenets of Martial Art Training - Lost values

The DEAD but not yet buried Western Culture has NO VALUES left. Values have been replaced by WOKE ideologies and lies of a world obsessed with politics. Believe the BS of the men and women who have always lied to them. Unable to think critically. Blindly following the words of those who rule them. That is very sad.

Today we have ring fighting that has no worth at all. It is only violence for glory. Glory is a function of the EGO and not just worthless but in my view EVIL. People worship other people who prove they are worthless by their lack of values, and even honestly.

I could name tens of thousands of these phony people, sport "stars" and celebrities. And I have no issue passing judgement on this.

This is NOT martial arts. Nor should it be the behavior of a martial artists. The World Budo Alliance is about promoting the values of martial art training, not promoting an agenda of destroying path of Budo with the LIE of "social justice."

Today much of the martial art taught is for the young. That makes it an activity, not a lifelong path. I want to see the Tenets of Martial Art Training, the values of the old masters return.

Tenets of Martial Art Training in Conclusion

Tenets of Martial Art Training conclusion

I am hoping that those of you reading this are men and women who want to bring values back to the martial arts, and to the world.

Change happens one person at a time and becomes exponential after. That is why I have brought the World Budo Alliance back to life.

To bring like minded people together, and get back to real martial art training and study. Getting back to martial arts begin a way of life, not a weekend activity to stroke the ego of the student and instructor.

I hope you enjoyed this article called Tenets of Martial Art Training.

The lost art of learning is one of the major reasons why the world is in the shape it is in. People want to know, be advises by liars calling themselves experts because they got a degree from an indoctrination camp. What is called college in the west.

life is a path of learning, not knowing. I am wise because I know that I know nothing. Therefore I continue the journey.

Back in 1938 Napoleon Hill stated that only 2% of the world' population are capable of critical thinking. From what I see today this is very accurate.

However the 98% are sure they are right because they saw it "online." This must change and change soon if we are ever going to move forward,

All Knowledge is Self Knowledge – Truth of Learning

* All Knowledge is Self Knowledge

All Knowledge is Self Knowledge - Truth of Learning. Today we are living in an extraordinary time. And if you base it on the theory of Yin Yang we are living in a predominate YIN state.

A time of great chaos. It is a time were wrong is right and lying is virtuous.

People are beginning to wake up and realize something is wrong. Very wrong. However, for those of us who are awake we are now seeing the tide turning.

As we begin to go from yin back to yang. Chaos to order.

All Knowledge is Self Knowledge - Chaos and Order

The educational system we have had for the last 100 years is a joke. Sorry to you "teachers" but you "had" a mission and sold out for a paycheck. All Knowledge is Self Knowledge, that is a truth of learning.

And since All Knowledge is Self Knowledge if you teach lies and falsehoods to people, this will cause conflict in the brain and lead to cognitive dissonance. And you will soon find out everything you think you know or believe about the world is a lie.

Martial Art training, real martial art training is a road to real learning. And what do I mean by "REAL" martial arts? A martial art that teaches VALUES, not politically correct bullshit, or that SPORT and winning is what matters. The values of OLD must be taught because they work! The experiment of the western culture has failed! And it fail a long time ago!

All Knowledge is Self Knowledge - Teaching Real Martial Arts

In martial arts, real martial arts the teacher uses movement of the body to link into the mind. The student learns thought movement to use the mind to make the body do amazing things.

However with everything in  balance. Kata is a way to do this. But not rushing from one simple kata to another to get a new belt. That does nothing! You need a deep understand of the movement. To feel everything that happens within the body. How the hips rotate, what moves first.

Back when I was in Canada I made a few appearances at my former Dojo. I figured I would teach some classes. And the students are good people. But with the exception of one or two are not truly students of the martial arts

Why do I say this? Because they were excited about seeing me, like I was a celebrity, not about learning what I know. I do not matter. The almost of 40 years of full time learning I have done is what matters.

As the saying goes, "seek not to be like the master, instead seek what the master sought."

All Knowledge is Self Knowledge

This is a famous quote from Bruce Lee. And it is my favorite of all his quotes.  But I do not idolize Bruce Lee. Today people worship other people and honestly it makes me sick. People are only people. And 99% of the people who get worshiped are evil, horrible people! Because they begin to think they are god like.

However perhaps they have knowledge that may help you? That knowledge is what matters. Not what song they sung, or what movie why starred in. Honestly who cares! I want to learn what James Mitose knew, the history of the art. That is my focus.

Better to be a good person, than a great person. The martial arts needs good people. We don't need loud mouth stars.

And the martial arts needs a new paradigm. One of learning, training, and without ego. Today the martial arts world is FULL of EGO.  Most of all where ego thrives, values die. The ego that speaks the loudest knows the least.

I have been very blesses to have met some very good people. Men who put their ego aside to TEACH me what they knew so I could REMEMBER what I already did know. Learning about myself.  Learning is really only remembering.

And when you walk this path you connect to your true self. Body to Mind to Spirit. That is the path, that is the goal. Not fame and fortune of a championship.

All Knowledge is Self Knowledge in Conclusion

All Knowledge is Self Knowledge in Conclusion

A complete martial art system includes much more than just punching and kicking. It is a study of the natural laws. This includes healing, writing, even growing herbs. All things. Kosho is a complete martial art

I have not taught in a Dojo as an operator for about  5 years or more.

And my days of running a Dojo, a commercial Dojo are finished. I have no plans any longer to travel and teach Kyusho either.  However I am going to build a Dojo on my compound at home where I will teach some selected students.

Thank you for reading All Knowledge is Self Knowledge

If you also believe we need to get back to the teachings of old, have a new paradigm of martial arts consider joining us here at the World Budo Alliance

The White Belt Mindset – Knowing You Know Nothing

* White Belt Mindset

The White Belt Mindset - Knowing You Know Nothing: Life is a journey, not a destination.

Today you will hear a lot of very politically motivated people saying "trust the experts." Well in my 6 decades on this earth I have not yet met someone I would consider to be an expert. I am have known some smart people, experts, not really.

I am not an expert, and I have been in the arts almost 40 years.

The White Belt Mindset

In fact I wrote an article a few years back called "a martial artist is NOT a self defense expert." and this is 100 percent truth.

Yet many, especially the "combat system" people act like they have all the answers. If they were honest they would admit they have a few answers, but not all the answers. And it they have integrity they would also be searching to learn more. But the Western Culture does not work that way. Today everyone is an "expert" in something. Especially if they read it on Facebook.

The White Belt Mindset is about the art of learning. And no matter how long you have been in the martial arts world you should be still seeking knowledge. The martial arts is not supposed to be about fighting or winning tournaments. It should be about self disciple, self improvement and self protection last.  Self Defense is a byproduct

Martial art training should be about developing the Body, the Mind and Spirit. With a dramatic increase in FOCUS. And the byproducts of a calm mind, one without extremes of uncontrolled emotional outbursts, is self defense. Self Defense is very difficult without a calm mind.

I am the wisest man in the world

The White Belt Mindset, yes, I am a wise man! That is because I know I know nothing. And I am excited, I have the White Belt Mindset, this is because I know there is so much to learn. And this is so very exciting.

When you think you have arrived, you are missing everything! Currently after beginning one journey 20 years ago, I am reviewing and learning more about the Natural Laws of the Octagon. The very complete martial art of Kosho Ryu. And I am loving it!

Now Kosho Ryu may not be for you. But something will be! Expand you knowledge. The more you learn the more you gain. You can tell those in the ruts of believing they have all the answer by how they attack others. Take a look at how the martial arts world has attacked George Dillman. And by people who have never met him, but they still know. What pathetic crap,

The White Belt Mindset

If you do not like him, fine that is your choice. But what he is doing is NOT anyone's business, unless he or she is committing a crime. I speak out very strongly about a majority of high profile people who are committing crimes against humanity.

When you rage on another martial artists most of the time it is because of jealousy. That is pathetic.

Learning and Health

Learning is brain health. Aside from the major corruption issues in western medicine it has been shown by some real scientists that learning can prevent the onset of many diseases and conditions of the brain.

Everyday I work to keep the White Belt Mindset by learning something. Aside from different aspects of martial art training I am also learning Romanian, and I love this. Plus each day because I host my own web server the operating system of Linux.

I do not allow a single day to go by without learning something. Even when it comes to pressure points, after 2 decades I still have those "ah ha" moments.

The White Belt Mindset in Conclusion

The White Belt Mindset - Conclusion

Today I am in great favor of people getting back to the basics in the martial arts world and teaching the real thing.

Traditional Martial Arts with the focus on tenets, and ethics. We have had enough sport in all fields to last a century.

When something becomes an obsession is becomes a mental health illness. I hope you enjoyed reading The White Belt Mindset.

Code of Budo: Patience is a Path to Understanding Life

* Code of Budo: Patience

Code of Budo: Patience: Martial Arts training, the path of Budo is NOT what the masses and a majority of martial artist believe. Some of the modern masters have a deep understanding of this.

However they are a minority. This needs to be, and must be changed.

Today what is called "martial arts" is just another example of instant gratification and glory.

And that is a superficial as a Facebook "like." It is meaningless. Martial Arts is a way of life, not a hobby.

Yet many build their self esteem based on this ideal.

Code of Budo

Budo is NOT about sport, or proving ones self to others. That is a falsehood. This article is part one of a series I am going to do on the path known as Budo. This is the Code of Budo: Patience. And patience is a DEAD virtue in the Western Culture.

Recently I wrote an article called Gratitude for Martial Art Training which in a way is also part of this series.

Budo is a path, it is a path of self disciple. Without self disciple people become self righteous, egotistical, lazy and corrupt. We see this in the world each and every day. However we as martial artist must learn to lead by example. If we are discipled, we show the world what disciple means.

Code of Budo: Patience

We are living in very difficult times. Mental illness, fear and anger are the state in which a large percent of people are living. And this is the result of apathy. Decades of apathy have allowed the corrupt to usurp the world.

Apathy, another "sin" of thinking.

* My Home Romania

However the tide is turning slowly. While it appears the world is going to hell in a hand cart, there is actually much improvement. However if you are still following the liars of the world you will not see this. And we have been lied to our entire lives.

But we, as a society devoid of patience, believe the great lie of instant everything, and therefore people suffer. This is the 1st Nobel Truth of Buddhism, "Life is suffering," However while pain is a fact of life, suffering is a optional. Personally I OPT OUT.

Code of Budo

But those who have spent a lifetime walking the path of Budo understand the Code of Budo: Patience.

As a child I was taught by my mother that "anything worth having is worth waiting for." And the wonderful things coming down the road as the evil we are seeing today is burning itself out, is very worth waiting for. But like everyone, I would still love to have it now.

However the law of patience tells me I have to wait.

Code of Budo - Training is the Path

* My Home Romania

Training is the vehicle down the path of Budo.  We training our bodies physically by controlling our minds. Making our minds stronger. As the mind develops it connects to our source, God, the higher self, whatever you wish to call it. But mindless training does not contain this benefit.

There are other vehicles, meditation as an example.

These benefits comes from training in a complete system. Otherwise Body - Mind -Spirit does not happen. My root art is Hapkido, and that is FAR from complete. This is why i branched out my training after 16 years in my root art to include Kosho Ryu, because it is a close to complete as you will find in modern times.

Learning is a lifetime journey. Find things to expand your mind and thinking.

Code of Budo - Patience teaches all

The Code of Budo: Patience is a true virtue. And when you begin to become patient you see the world differently. Right now, I am waiting on a life changing event personally. While I will not discuss the event I am not alone in this.

And even though I really want and need this to happen, I am learning something very important. I am grateful down to my soul for having the opportunity to be part of it. Having developed the clear vision to see what is happening. And the great health to enjoy what will happen. I am patient like never before.

And my entire life has brought me to this point. This is is also for me a 40 year path of martial art training. This is what I have done all my adult life.

Now every person can do this. It is possible what you do for a living, or what you hobbies are can take you down a similar path. I can only speak from my point of view. But my dear mother walked the path of Budo, but did so via a different vehicle.

Put yourself into a patient place.

Code of Budo

* My Home Romania

Code of Budo: My mother was truly my mentor in life. I unlike many people had a great childhood. My father pasted when I was 19. But my mother lived a very long life by today's standard to 96 years.

At the time of her passing on August 11th 2016 I was in need of change.

Years before I had decided to close my Dojo, Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts and move to Romania. I chose Romania for many reasons.

Mom and I talked about this at length. She was not afraid of death and in truth welcomed it.

I took care of her at home right up to her last breath. Unlike the western culture, a failed culture believes, the elderly are the responsibility of their children. Not something to be discarded to "homes" to die alone because "you" need a better car. And mom and dad are now inconvenient to your "wants" in life.

Code of Budo

And because of my upbringing, and with my plans in life I learned what was most important. With my son Scott at my side we put her last years as the most important thing for us and our lives. We could not, and would not move on until she left this life.

And I am grateful beyond words for the change to do this.

After she pasted Scott and I moved to Romania, which is where we call home today. We live a very simple life, without ANY unnecessary possessions. Most people would not like this life. We love it!

But it is the path of Budo that allows us to live out of the "status quo" and a life of consumption for consumption sake. The lie that the more you :own: the happier you will be.

"The less I have the more I gain."

Code of Budo in Conclusion

Code of Budo: Patience in Conclusion

I can only talk from my life perspective. That may or may not resonate with you, But if it makes you think then I have done what I wanted.

Your experiences are you own and only you know if you are on a path of development or decline.

And those people who were once in my life, many have mocked me for my choices. I find this humorous. Now my entire world has been martial arts all my adult life, so these "mockers" are former students.

But, if I was to address the things said I would ask them if they are happy. Mocking is a sign of the many different low thinking aspects of life. Those who live a life in envy.

While life is always a challenge, the path of Budo has brought me much joy and contentment. Patience is a key aspect of this path. But patience must be learned and practiced. And when you fall, you stand up and begin to walk once again.

Patience is a virtue beyond measure in a world devoid of virtue.

I hope you enjoyed the Code of Budo.

Gratitude for Martial Arts Training provides great wisdom

* Gratitude for Martial Arts Training

Gratitude for Martial Arts Training: We are living in a very special time in history. The world is at war. An information war. Governments are out of control, the education, medical, and big tech are corrupt, proudly, and mockingly show this. And the failing Western Culture shows is now for all to see.  Lies, deceit, cowardice, and backstabbing are now considered to be virtuous.

And the martial arts world is a mess too. Dojo's, especially traditional ones closing their doors because of dystopian restrictions. Yet "sport" because it is big money survives. There is not science in anything they claim science in. It is lying for the sake of profit.

People are proudly "self entitled." So very PATHETIC!

Strength is now considered weakness and weakness strength.

Gratitude for Martial Arts Training

Gratitude for Martial Arts Training: Gratitude is and always has been the way forward. And Gratitude for Martial Arts Training has always been a big part of my adult life. And this gratitude has led me down of path of great opportunity and learning.

An example of what I am talking about is pressure points. Over 20 years ago I started learning Kyusho Jitsu from Grand Master Steve Stewart. And Kyusho is a controversial subject.

Why is that?

It takes time, training and dedication. But so many martial art masters are so egotistical, so self righteous, that not knowing it means they must attack those who do. They rarely attack me anymore because I take no prisoners. Their "opinions" are worthless to me. So they do not bother to try to bully me.

Gratitude for Martial Arts Training

Bullying, egotism, jealousy and greed are a very low vibrations of thinking, and are so very pathetic. If they had open minds and were grateful, then doors would open for them. And they would not need to lie to make themselves feel better about their training and their life.

I am the wisest man because I know I know nothing! Life is about learning. And successful learning, not indoctrination, thus creating a vast knowledge, and strong mind and a connection to spirit.

Gratitude, like love is a HIGH vibration thought process. And it is the way of the warrior. True warriors, not those pretending.  This is one reason for me resurrecting the WBA. To unite martial artist of a like mind.

Gratitude for Martial Arts Training in Conclusion

Gratitude for Martial Arts Training Article Conclusion

I am hoping to expand the World Budo Alliance to something bigger than it once was. And as time goes by I will be looking for directors and contributor. But right now I am building. You can list your Dojo FREE, become a member FREE and I even send out free membership certificates.

I am doing all the work, and covering all the costs. I am not looking for money for this project from anyone! But the funny thing, and it is a reflection of society, only a small percent to apply say "thank you" for the certificates.

This speaks VOLUMES about the martial art industry today. That Gratitude for Martial Arts Training or anything in life in general is DEAD. But I have an Eidetic memory. They will not do well with us here at the WBA.

I hope you enjoyed Gratitude for Martial Arts Training. Life is a path and that path is about learning. Martial Art training is the perfect vehicle to do so!

Traditional Martial Arts Training. Learning the Wisdom of Old

* Traditional Martial Arts Training

Traditional Martial Arts Training: It is almost 40 years since I wrapped a white belt around my crisp new Gi and began a journey that still continues today. And I came from a traditional martial art system of Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do with a perhaps 5 percent sport aspect.  Now Hapkido has no Kata, which was the Tae Kwon Do aspect of the art.

I spent 16 years to 4th Dan Black Belt with this teacher. A great man.

But as the years past by I watched as sport began to take over the arts, and my teacher who was a national level competitor told me this was was NOT good thing.

And I must agree with him 10,000 percent.

Traditional Martial Arts Training

The training of the old masters was in my view today the very best way. But it includes something that society does not want today, something called HARD WORK AND RESPONSIBILITY. And people do not want this, but rather seeking instant gratification. This does not hurt the martial arts, it hurts the people who are simply too lazy and self righteous to do the work.

And those who want hard work have been sold a pack of lies that MMA and being a champion is the way go, and this is what "martial arts" really means.

Sorry I disagree.

Traditional Martial Arts Training

Ring fighting today is pure barbarianism with the crowd and fighters screaming for blood.  There is a MMA school back in my city of birth, who was when I was running my Dojo Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts , advertising an image of a fighter being punched in the face and blood spraying from his mouth along side of a cute child and the caption "we teach kids too."

And IDIOT parents actually enrolled with this clown. He has no morals or values and betrayed his teacher, a great man of tradition to open his fight club. I cannot respect this or him. Sadly this is becoming the norm, not the exception to the norm. Today lying is considered virtue.

Traditional Martial Arts Training

His goal was to put me out of business and he said this publicly. However he failed. I got out of the business for a different reason.

Traditional Martial Arts Training is what I believe in, and with the VALUES lacking in society today, this training as the cornerstone of teaching and practice. And this is why I brought the World Budo Alliance back to life. It is to find like minded martial artists and teachers to come together to form a strong union.

One of respect, values and continuing the teaching. From there promoting these benefits to the world.

Traditional Martial Arts Training - Tenets of my Dojo

Back in 2003 I had the great honour and privilege of having a coffee with Grand Master Joon Rhee. He asked me about of my school had Tenets and a Student Creed. I told him yes, and I also had a Black Belt Creed.

His words were "a martial art without tenets and values is barbarianism,"

I could not agree more.

My Tenets are:
  • Integrity
  • Courtesy
  • Self Control
  • Commitment
  • Perseverance
  • Indomitable Spirit

Is this what the martial arts world is teaching today? Or is it just a love of money?

My Student Creed

"I develop myself physically and mentally based on the martial art spirit."

"And I will ONLY fight to protect my life and the lives or others."

" I achieve my fullest potential in developing knowledge, honesty and strength"

These are the values of Traditional Martial Arts Training! Not the blood and guts garbage out there today! And these are the values we need are society to be built on. Not lies, deceit, propaganda and tyranny. That is barbarianism at its full maturity.

Traditional Martial Arts Training in Conclusion

Traditional Martial Arts Training Conclusion

I hope you will join me on this journey to being back the values of the old ways.

Age brings wisdom. The masters of old were very wise.

The benefits of martial art training come with TIME.

And the benefits of training is what develops GOOD, strong and righteous people. Not politically correct liars and self serving manipulators.

Complete Martial Art Training Body for Mind and Spirit

* Complete Martial Art Training

Complete Martial Art Training: I have been training in the martial arts world for a very long time. It is going on 40 years now. And while I no longer run a commercial Dojo I have never taken a break from training and learning.

I did burn out on teaching in a Dojo setting, but that was from teaching children. My days of teaching kids is LONG GONE.

Not long ago I wrote an article on my Kyusho Jitsu World Blog called Martial Arts needs a New Paradigm. I have had some very interesting feedback on that one. Some agree, some think I am dead wrong. Many of those who have given feedback I know personally. And it is funny. Their position is based on their years of experience

And experience tells me this is all normal. But as time goes by, if you continue training you begin to realize there is so much more to learn. You want Complete Martial Art Training, training of not just the body, but the mind and spirit.

My Journey

I was with my first teacher, and he was a great martial artist and teacher, for 18 years. But I was in a study of Hapkido, a great martial art, but one I knew was not complete. My heart told me I was missing a lot, I had a hungry heart.

So I gave notice to my teacher in January of 2000 and opened my own Dojo, Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts Institute in March 2000. I began search for what else I could learn, how to expand my training. Hence I ended up in contact with a Dave Degrouchie, the Founder of the World Budo Alliance. I joined immediately, and it opened more doors for me than I could ever have imagined.

I met so many very important and influential martial artist, well they are too numerous to mention. Adn when I do the politics comes out, and I am just not interested.

But I discovered a martial art that was complete. That is Kosho Shorie Ryu.

Kosho Shorie Ryu

* Kosho Shorei Ryu

I first jumped on the Kosho path in 2001. And I trained intensely for about a year, and I was shocked at home much there as to learn. But while I never stopped the Kosho path I did leave my teacher. We wanted different things. He wanted to create a Kosho empire. I was building a Dojo.

After this I stopped using the term Kosho and jut talked about Octagon and Natural Laws

I focused on the art I was developing with my sons, Hon Sang Mu Sa Hapkido. But my root art is so heavily focused on Octagon I have circled back to Kosho, and containing my study and training in it.

Now I am not going to be opening a Dojo and teaching Kosho. I am creating a course, ONE course to get people started. This is the Kosho Shorie Ryu. This is a beginning, but far from the complete picture.

What is Complete Martial Art Training?

Martial Arts has never been just kicking and punching, or winning a FIGHT. It is a path, a journey to a better life, better health, better everything. Here are some of the things covered in Complete Martial Art Training.

1) Martial Arts Foundational Movement
2) Kata training
3) Pressure Points Training
4) Bunkai
5) Aspects of Self Defense (36 Kumite)
6) Theories
7) Philosophies
8) Meditation
9) Massage
10 Herbal medicines
11) Health
12 Calligraphy
13) Weapons
14) Meditation
15) Chi Development

And there is NO end to it!

In Conclusion

Complete Martial Art Training in Conclusion

This path is not for everyone. And there is nothing wrong with that. For me it is the path I have followed a very long time. I make a living teaching Kyusho Jitsu. I am also setting up a Dog Rescue and network to support this. Plus I have added the World Budo Alliance to this.

I hope you will join me on this exciting journey.

The Importance of the History of Martial Arts

* History of Martial Arts

History of Martial Arts is no different than any other form of history.

When I as young, in high school, I hated history class. But then the school system was pretty useless because in Canada little of real world use was taught.

They focused on the war of 1812, when it should have been WWI and WWII. But I digress.

Today as an old man in the mountains I love history. Most importantly for the sake of this article the History of Martial Arts. "If we do not now where we come from, then we will not know where we are going."

In today's modern martial art environment, with the focus on sport, this history is being lost. And that is very sad.

We now risk losing a lot of great traditions and teachings. We have already lost so many.

The history of the martial arts is essential for survival!

History of Martial Arts - Masters of Old

My first "Grand Master" never talked with us about the history of Hapkido. I wrote an article on this called the Essence of Hapkido to discuss some of this history. And the reasons I created my own art form. I did not dishonor history by doing this. In fact I kept history by growing and developing

The martial arts world is full of egos, and ego makes someone unteachable. In today's world people are more focused on being "right" than knowing the truth.

And this is a vast majority of the population in the western cultures. In martial arts it is terrible.

No master of old created anything. Martial arts is simply movement. However they developed ideas of understanding movement and understanding why people do the things they do. And I laugh when I see the in fighting within systems, saying "no professor did it this way" somehow thinking that the great grand master never learned and evolved himself. Then you look at the fact that each person arguing trained during a different period with "professor."

History of Martial Arts

The death of these legendary masters left a huge hole to be filled. And aside from a few great martial artist this void has been filled with ego and self serving actions. An example is the teaching of Oyata.

I one night about 11 years ago got a phone call while driving home from the Dojo. It was someone claiming to be a direct decedent of Oyata. He went on and on about Dillman. I politely ended the conversation. You are such an egotistical loser you worry about what someone else is doing? If someone is a liar it always comes out. But liars always try to hide the truth.

And very sadly today in the western cultures lying has become virtue.

Without the study of the history of the martial arts I am afraid many of the current systems will be gone within a few years. I am not going to name them, but I think many of you see this.

History of Martial Arts

And this is not the fault of commercialization of the arts. You can commercialize and not sell out. It is an egotistical teacher trying to look important. Fact is on the grand scheme of things none of us are.

Today in my old Dojo in Canada, which I have no direct involvement in, my picture hangs. To me this is an honor for me. Because the teachers want their students to know where they come from. This way they can see where they are going.

Back in fall 2020 while I was in Canada a former student came to see me at the Dojo. He then preceded to point out everything the current teachers were doing wrong. I told him that I was not concerned and he did not need to be either.

But often he would try to correct me on the floor having no idea where I was going with the teaching. This is all just ego. And it means learning has stopped.

I hope you see the importance of teaching and learning the History of Martial Arts.

Becoming a Good Steward of Martial Arts

* Becoming a Good Steward of Martial Arts

Becoming a Good Steward of Martial Arts: The World Budo Alliance is about bringing the martial arts community together, uniting it. It is about bringing back the values of old into our Dojo's and our teaching.

Becoming a Good Steward of Martial Arts means that the students in your world come first. Not the politics of self promotion and ego. Teaching without prejudice to those who truly do want to learn.

Now myself I am very particular as to who I would teach my root art of Hon Sang Mu Sa Hapkido too, as well as Kosho Ryu in the real world. And there is nothing wrong with that. But there needs to always be an honesty about this.

What is the WBA

The WBA is not a place for "martial sport."  There are enough organizations to support them.  And I also do NOT consider MMA to be martial arts. Just as some consider boxing to be a martial art I disagree. It does not meet the criteria for the term.

The WBA is also not a place of politics and giant egos. We all have egos, but self control and self disciple, tenets of the arts, means we keep them under control. And while we will be dealing with promotion in rank, the rank must be justified. We will not be promoting 10 year veterans to 10th Dan Black Belts.

Becoming a Good Steward of Martial Arts

Becoming a Good Steward of Martial Arts is about teaching what you know, sharing the knowledge with others. This is the ONLY path to martial art mastery. You learn by teaching. Winning competitions is "cute" but purely based on the ego. And it is a game for the young also. But it is a game.

Teaching of the martial arts is about not just the teaching of punching and kicking. But the values, morals and tenets that should always lead the teaching. They are arts of peace, a preparation for the possibility of future battles if tyranny should arise. This is one reason today that the tradition martial arts voices like myself are being censored.

Martial Art training is a path of life. Teaching students to become good people, strong people, focused people. Not ideologies spouting out the things they have "heard" stroking their own egos with false self importance.

Martial artists are not victims, they are warriors. Understanding life is a challenge to be met. Not looking for a "save place" to hide from life.

Politics in Martial Arts – Survival Depends on Ending Division

* Politics in Martial Arts

Politics in Martial Arts: Welcome to the first article posted on the World Budo Alliance Blog. I was actually not planning on doing a blog with this website.

However I decided I would prefer to write articles on the martial art world in general rather then my Kyusho Jitsu World Alliance blog.

I think it is better to maintain the Kyusho Jitsu / Pressure Point focus there.

Today I want to discuss a BIG problem, Politics in Martial Arts. This was the reason the World Budo Alliance was founded. To provide a politics free environment for the martial artist and school owner alike to flourish.

Politics in Martial Arts

Politics in Martial Arts has been around as long as I have been training. And that is coming up on 40 years now. I must assume it has been around for much longer than this also. I am guessing at this point as long as the arts have been in the western world.

Today the entire world is obsessed with politics. You go on any Social Media platform and it is nothing but people arguing about their extreme ideologies. Yes at this time in history a discussion needs to be had. The world is on fire.

But it is time to grow up, and agree to disagree on some points. The body count of this tyranny is now in excess of 250 million in the Western World.

But on to the point of this article, Politics in Martial Arts. My first real up close observation of the politics was at a tournament shortly after I opened my school in 2000. I had just become a member of the World Budo Alliance which was a non political martial arts alliance rooted in eastern Canada.

It had become very popular and the mandate was the promotion and unification of the arts globally. Not to dictate policy, but to network martial arts instructors and teachers.

Politics in Martial Arts

I was attending a tournament with my students from Belle River where Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts first opened. This was an tournament sponsored by the International Tae Kwon Do Federation. Here i met a man who was very high profile in the ITF. I will not state is name as I have nothing good to say about him.

At the start of the tournament my oldest son and I were requested to meet in the referee's meeting room. The man came in shook my hand. At the time he was a 6th Dan Black Belt, very personable. During the meeting he told his students, and being an ITF tournament they were all his students because he was the "head" of a certain demographic,  that they were going to see some "old style" movement an never to copy it.

Politics in Martial Arts

Later we talked outside during the tournament. He asked me about my lineage and told me I was welcome to join his organization as long as I was willing to change to all of their methods. And he offered to swap certificates and give me a 3rd Dan in place of my 5th Dan. He impressed up me that their certificates were legitimate and mine was not. I asked him why he was not called "master" and he told me that there was only one Master and that was the General.

I declined his invitation for many reasons. However when the general passed away on June 15th 2002 suddenly this gentleman was "master" and higher in rank. He deserved the title for sure, however is is too much politics for my liking. So what changed? With the General gone the power grab began.

So why was I as a Hapkido guy welcome in the ITF? Because my school was growing fast and it was a profit center. The ITF would get dues from the school and each student. I have no issue with the idea of dues, but I was not going to give up my sovereignty. Also I have left several great instructors over the years because of this issues. Plus I am not willing to work for anyone.

Politics in Martial Arts can be death for an art.

Politics in Martial Arts & Politics is Death

One of the most extreme places you see Politics of Martial Arts is when the founder passes on. Actually what has happened in the ITF is a great example. After General Choi passed away it fractioned terribly.

Why did this happen? Well yes 100 percent egos! Let's look at more examples.

Politics in Martial Arts - American Kenpo

On December 15th 1990 when American Kenpo Founder Ed Parker passed away suddenly and all hell broke loose. American Kenpo fractioned into many different camps. And I can see that is logical from a demographic standpoint. however...

Most of all the division between the groups can be tasted. How did this happen? Yes ego for one, however because Park left much too soon, there was no clear person he designated to inherit the American Kenpo system. From what I read back in the early 90's his son stepped up to take over. But I have heard he was not qualified to do so. Bloodline cannot be the only factor. Kosho is a great example after Mitosi sensei passed away. His son was not qualified which is why Mitosi left the system to Bruce Juchnik, and there is documentation to show this!

Yesterday I received a HIT piece on Juchnik. Very sad!!

Politics in Martial Arts - Aikido

Aikido is another great example. Every Aikido practitioner I have ever known has commented on the tension between the groups. Each claiming to be the only group following the teaching of O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. From what I have been told by many long time Aikido stylists Ueshiba never taught all he knew to his students.

But it is so sad to see the in fighting and arguments. Such a beautiful martial art of great values. Unlike anything today. I would love to see unification here. Of the 2 main groups from my understanding one learned from O'Sensei and his early teachings, and the other his later teachings. Imagine of they came together?

Politics in Martial Arts - Kyusho Jitsu

Grand Master George Dillman is the undisputed head of Kyusho Jitsu. It has been about 10 years since I last spoke with GM Dillman. I have heard that he is for the most part retired, which I find hard to imagine. Therefore I hope he leaves a clear path for his teaching after he is gone.  Dillman has some great people under him. I would hate to see politics destroy what he has done.

And most of all when it comes to me I came from this system. However I left because I was never going to excel within its confines. Politics was the reason.

My Root art

As you likely are aware I founded my own system in 2006. A lot of thinking and discussion happened before I moved forward. I have laid a clear path as to what I want for the art when I am gone. Most of all I would hate to see politics come into it, and former students trying to make a claim to the art itself. While my oldest boy has no interest, which is fine, my youngest boys does, and he will have 2 or 3 people to help in with this task.

And Scott is qualified!

Politics in Martial Arts in Conclusion

Politics in Martial Arts in Conclusion

I have resurrected the World Budo Alliance for those interested in networking and leaving the BS of politics behind. Anyone who starts political issues here will be removed. Right now our membership is growing quickly. And this makes me very happy!

I am not interested in world fame with this organization, only providing a home for martial artist who wish to preserve the teachings, expand their own knowledge and grow as people. If we have 10 members or 10,000 all is good.

The world is abscessed by politics today, and Politics in Martial Arts is a death sentence for it.
